What is salvation?

Salvation is God’s rescue from sin, separation and death. Through Jesus, God brings us back into relationship with himself, forgives us and gives us new life. Salvation begins now and carries the promise of resurrection life beyond death.

One picture we have used at The Lakes Church is a drowning person being rescued. Kicking harder will not bring them safely to shore when they are exhausted and going under. They need someone able to reach them, and they need to receive the rescue. Jesus has come to do what we cannot do for ourselves.

We receive salvation by God’s grace through faith. It is not a reward for religious effort or for becoming good enough. We turn towards Jesus, trust that he is the Son of God, and receive the forgiveness and life made possible through his death and resurrection.

Being saved is the beginning of life with Jesus. His Spirit starts reshaping our desires, relationships and choices, and we learn to do the good he has prepared for us. Baptism is an important public step in that new life, but neither baptism nor good works earn salvation. They are ways we respond to the gift.
