Jesus died to rescue us from sin and bring us back into relationship with God. His death was a real act of human violence, carried out by political and religious powers. Christians also believe Jesus willingly gave himself in love, and that God was working through the cross to forgive, heal and reconcile.
Sin is more than breaking a list of rules. It damages us, harms other people and separates us from God. The Bible describes Jesus’ death in several ways: a sacrifice made once for all, a ransom that sets people free, a victory over evil, and the act that brings enemies home. Each picture helps us see part of what the cross means.
The cross also tells us what God is like. God does not watch suffering from a safe distance. In Jesus, God enters our pain, carries the weight of human evil and responds with costly love. Good Friday is honest about grief, while Easter declares that violence, sin and death do not get the last word.
We cannot earn what Jesus has done for us. We receive forgiveness and new life as a gift, then learn to live in response to that grace. Following Jesus means trusting that his love is enough and allowing that love to reshape how we treat God, ourselves and other people.
