Why do Christians say Jesus is the only way to God? Are all religions basically the same?

Christians say Jesus is the way to God because that is how Jesus spoke about himself. In John 14 he told worried friends, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” In context, this was not a slogan for winning an argument. Jesus was asking them to trust him, including with their future beyond death.

Religions are not basically the same. They may share some moral wisdom, but they make different claims about God, humanity, what has gone wrong and how it can be put right. They also give very different answers about Jesus. Pretending those differences do not matter is not respectful to Christians or to people of other faiths.

The Christian claim is not that Christians are better than everybody else. It is that we cannot rescue ourselves, and that God has come to us in Jesus with forgiveness and life as a gift. That should produce humility, not arrogance. At The Lakes Church we want to listen well, treat every person with dignity and never use pressure or contempt.

People should be free to ask questions, examine Jesus’ life and decide whether he can be trusted. Christians can speak honestly about our conviction that Jesus is unique while also loving our neighbours and learning from them. Truthful disagreement and genuine respect belong together.
