Is Jesus God?

Yes. The historic Christian claim is that Jesus is truly human and truly God. Christians do not believe he was God pretending to be human, or merely a good teacher who was later promoted to divine status. In Jesus, God lived with us and shared human life.

The Gospels show Jesus doing things that point beyond an ordinary teacher. He forgives sins, speaks with God’s authority, receives worship, commands creation and brings healing. Just as importantly, his compassion shows us God’s character. Jesus welcomes outsiders, touches people others avoid and gives himself for those he loves.

The Bible uses several ways to say this. Isaiah looks forward to a child who will be called Mighty God. John says that the eternal Word was God and became flesh. Jesus’ rescue is deeper than making life more convenient. He came to deal with sin and death and restore us to God.

Christians describe God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That can take time to understand, and no short explanation removes all the mystery. The clearest place to start is Jesus himself. Look at what he says and does, and ask whether this is what God is like.
