Is hell real?

Jesus spoke seriously about judgment, so Christians should not brush hell aside. The Bible uses vivid images such as fire, darkness and exclusion to warn that evil is real and that rejecting God has consequences. Those images are meant to wake us up, not give us a detailed map of the life to come.

Christians agree that God will judge justly, but they do not all agree on exactly what final judgment involves. Some understand hell as ongoing conscious punishment, others as final destruction, and there are other views within the Christian tradition. We should be clear about the warning while being honest about the debate.

Hell must never be used to frighten people into church or to make confident claims about the destiny of particular people. God knows every person fully and judges more fairly than we do. At The Lakes Church we want to speak about this with humility, especially when people are carrying grief, fear or painful experiences of religion.

The centre of Christianity is not a threat but Jesus. In him, God comes towards us with truth, mercy and forgiveness, bearing the cost of evil rather than ignoring it. Judgment is real, and so is grace. The Christian invitation is to trust Jesus and receive the life with God that he freely offers.
