How can I forgive someone who has hurt me?

Forgiveness begins with naming the wrong honestly. It does not mean calling evil acceptable, denying your anger or pretending the damage was small. Christians forgive because Jesus offers us grace, but that grace never asks us to protect another person from the truth or consequences of what they have done.

Forgiveness can mean releasing your right to revenge and refusing to let resentment control the rest of your life. That is often a gradual process, especially after deep harm. You may need to make the same choice many times, with prayer, wise support and space to grieve what was lost.

Forgiveness, trust and reconciliation are different. Trust must be rebuilt through honest repentance and changed behaviour. Reconciliation requires willingness and safety on both sides. You can forgive someone without restoring the relationship, giving them access to you or meeting them alone. Abuse should be reported, and firm boundaries may be necessary.

If you have hurt somebody, asking for forgiveness also requires honesty. Listen without defending yourself, accept appropriate consequences and do what you can to repair the harm. Whether you caused the hurt or received it, Jesus can meet you in a process that may take time.
