Churches and Christians have caused real harm. That includes abuse, racism, exclusion, coercion, misuse of money and power, covering up wrongdoing, and silencing people who spoke about what happened. Saying that Christians are imperfect does not excuse any of it. Harm done in Jesus’ name can wound a person’s faith as well as the rest of their life.
Jesus was severe with religious leaders who protected their position while burdening or exploiting others. He cared for vulnerable people and warned strongly against causing them harm. A church cannot claim to represent Jesus while valuing its own reputation above truth, safety and justice.
If a church or Christian has harmed you, you do not owe them quick forgiveness, restored trust, renewed access or a private confrontation. Forgiveness is different from pretending nothing happened. Safety, truthful reporting, proper investigation, accountability and skilled support all matter. Criminal behaviour should be taken to the appropriate authorities.
The Lakes Church is not above failure. We are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable people, taking concerns seriously and responding rather than hiding them. We are sorry for the ways churches have betrayed people. Rebuilding trust, if it happens at all, begins with listening, truth and changed behaviour.
