There are many Christian churches in Cairns, with different sizes, traditions, music and ways of gathering. The right church is not necessarily the one with the slickest service or the people most like you. Look for a community that keeps Jesus central, takes the Bible seriously and treats people with honesty and love.
Pay attention to what happens beyond the stage. Are questions welcomed? Are children and vulnerable people protected? Do leaders accept accountability? Is there room for people who are struggling, uncertain or different? A healthy church will not be perfect, but it should be willing to admit mistakes, address harm and keep growing.
Visit more than once if you can. Listen to the teaching, talk with people, ask about the church’s beliefs and practices, and notice whether its life matches its words. Pray for wisdom. You may also need to consider practical things such as location, disability access, children’s programs and whether you can build real relationships there.
