Communion is a simple meal of bread and juice that helps Christians remember Jesus. At his last meal with his disciples, Jesus used bread to speak about his body and a cup to speak about his blood. He was preparing them to understand his death on the cross.
The meal reaches back to the Jewish Passover story of rescue and points to the new covenant Jesus made possible. Christians eat and drink with gratitude because his death brings forgiveness, freedom and a restored relationship with God. Communion also looks forward to Jesus’ return and the renewal of all things.
Communion is something the church shares, rather than a private religious exercise. The same bread and cup remind us that Jesus has brought very different people into one family. It gives us a regular opportunity to examine our lives, receive grace and take safe, honest steps towards repairing damaged relationships.
At The Lakes Church communion is open to anyone who wants to remember and thank Jesus for what he has done. You do not need to prove yourself or complete a religious test. If you are not ready to take part, you can let it pass without embarrassment.
