Can God forgive me for what I have done?

Can God forgive me for what I have done?

Yes. God’s forgiveness is available even when what you have done is serious and you cannot undo it. One of the criminals crucified beside Jesus had no time to rebuild his life or prove himself. He turned to Jesus, and Jesus promised that he would be with him. Grace reached that man hanging next to Jesus.

Forgiveness begins with honesty. The Bible uses words such as confession and repentance. Confession means naming what is true. Repentance means changing your mind and turning around. You do not earn forgiveness through good deeds or the right prayer. You come to Jesus, admit your need and receive what he has done for you.

Forgiveness does not remove every consequence. If other people have been harmed, repentance includes telling the truth, making repair where possible and accepting appropriate boundaries or legal consequences. Asking God to forgive us must never be used to silence victims or avoid responsibility.

Some people carry shame for harm that was done to them rather than by them. That is not guilt God asks you to own. If you are unsure, speak with a safe and trustworthy person who can help you separate guilt, shame and trauma. Jesus receives people who turn to him and offers a clean beginning, a restored relationship with God and help to live differently.
