What does the Bible say about anxiety, worry and finding peace?

The Bible speaks to anxious people without treating anxiety as a character flaw. Jesus talked about worry because he knew how easily fear about tomorrow can take over today. The Psalms also give people words for panic, exhaustion and distress instead of telling them to hide what they feel.

Paul encouraged Christians to bring their needs to God in prayer and said God’s peace can guard our hearts and minds. Prayer gives us somewhere to place what we cannot control. It may not change our circumstances quickly, but we do not have to carry them alone. Jesus offers his presence when we are in trouble.

Clinical anxiety is more than ordinary worry, and it is not evidence of weak faith. At The Lakes Church we believe prayer, Scripture and supportive community can sit alongside help from a GP, psychologist or counsellor. Therapy and medication can be wise forms of care, and nobody should feel ashamed for needing them.

If anxiety is disrupting daily life, tell someone you trust and seek professional help. If you are in immediate danger or may harm yourself, call 000. Lifeline is available in Australia on 13 11 14. God’s love for you is not reduced by anxiety, diagnosis or treatment.
