How do I pray?

Prayer is talking with God and making room to listen. You do not need special words, a certain posture or a religious voice. You can tell God what is happening, what you need, what you are grateful for and what you do not understand. God already knows you, so you can be honest.

When Jesus’ disciples asked him how to pray, he gave them what we call the Lord’s Prayer. It begins with God as Father, honours who he is, asks for his kingdom and will to be real in the world, brings everyday needs to him, seeks forgiveness and asks for help with temptation. You can use that pattern in your own words. The Psalms can also lend you words when your own words are hard to find.

Prayer is a relationship, so it includes listening as well as speaking. At The Lakes Church, we sometimes leave quiet space after we pray and pay attention to what comes to mind. The Bible helps us recognise God’s character and test what we think we are hearing. God will not lead us in a way that contradicts the life and teaching of Jesus.

If you are not sure where to start, try four short prayers: ‘Thank you, God.’ ‘I’m sorry, forgive me.’ ‘Please help me.’ ‘What do you want me to know or do?’ Pause between them.
