What are spiritual gifts, and are they still for today?

Spiritual gifts are abilities the Holy Spirit gives so people can help others and build up the church. The New Testament mentions gifts such as serving, teaching, encouragement, generosity, leadership, mercy, faith, healing, prophecy and tongues. No one person has every gift, and no gift makes someone more important than anyone else.

At The Lakes Church, we believe the Holy Spirit still gives gifts today. Some Christians and churches understand this differently, especially the more obviously supernatural gifts. We can disagree without treating one another as less faithful to Jesus.

Every gift should be used in love, with humility, order and accountability. A spiritual gift is not permission to control people, draw attention to ourselves or avoid ordinary wisdom. Public gifts should strengthen others and be practised in a way that people can understand and weigh.

You may discover your gifts while serving, noticing what brings life to other people and listening to the feedback of those who know you. Start with the need in front of you rather than waiting for a label. The point of a gift is to play your part in showing the love of Jesus.
