God’s will is not usually a secret code for discovering one perfect job, relationship or decision. Jesus gives us a clear starting point: love God and love your neighbour. Any guidance we believe comes from God should move us towards the character and way of Jesus.
Scripture, prayer, wisdom, circumstances, our gifts and the counsel of trustworthy people can all help us make decisions. None of those should be used mechanically. An open door is not always God’s direction, and a difficult path is not necessarily the wrong one.
Sometimes people sense a particular nudge or impression from the Holy Spirit. At The Lakes Church, we think those impressions should be held with humility and tested. They should agree with Scripture, look like Jesus, produce love rather than pressure, and be weighed with wise people, especially when the decision will affect others.
You may not receive a complete map. Make the wisest decision you can with the light you have, remain open to correction and trust that God can keep working even if you do not choose perfectly. Often God’s will becomes clearer while we are faithfully doing the next good thing.
