Yes. Jesus of Nazareth was a real first-century Jewish teacher from Galilee. His existence is accepted by the great majority of historians who study the ancient world, including historians who do not believe he was the Son of God. The earliest Christian writings appeared within decades of his death, while people connected with the events were still alive.
The New Testament is our main source for Jesus, but it is not the only ancient evidence. The Jewish historian Josephus and the Roman historian Tacitus both refer to Jesus or to his execution and followers. Their accounts were written later and need to be read carefully, but they support the basic historical picture that Jesus lived, taught and was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
History can establish some things more confidently than others. It can ask whether Jesus lived, what he taught and why he was killed. The claim that Jesus is God’s Son and rose from the dead goes further. That deserves its own investigation rather than being smuggled into the answer to a historical question.
At The Lakes Church, we encourage people to examine the evidence without pretending that every question is easy. Read Mark or Luke, notice the person they describe, and ask what explanation best makes sense of Jesus and the movement that began around him.
