Who wrote the Bible, and has it been changed over time?

The Bible is a library, not a single book dropped from heaven. It contains writings produced by many people across many centuries: historians, poets, prophets, letter writers and others. Some books name their writers, while others are anonymous. Christians believe God speaks through these genuinely human voices.

The books were copied by hand long before printing. Scribes sometimes made mistakes or small changes, so surviving manuscripts are not identical. That is not a secret scholars are trying to hide. They compare manuscripts, early translations and quotations to work out the earliest recoverable wording, and modern Bibles often note meaningful variations.

So, has the Bible changed? There are real differences between copies and translations, and we should be honest about them. But that is very different from a claim that somebody secretly rewrote the Bible. The scholarly manuscript tradition lets differences be identified and studied rather than concealed.

At The Lakes Church we do not expect every book in the Bible to sound alike. We pay attention to its writer, audience, genre and place in the larger story. Above all, Christians read the Bible through Jesus, because we believe he shows us most clearly what God is like.
