Cairns to the Cape
We are partnering with Churches of Christ to bring joy to foster and kinship families across Far North Queensland this Christmas!
What is Cairns to the Cape?
The Churches of Christ Children, Youth and Families division is based in Cairns and serves foster and kinship families in Aurukun, Cairns, Kowanyama, Lockhart River, Mapoon, Pormpuraaw and Weipa. Children belong in safe and caring homes, but families are complicated. Some face significant challenges that mean it’s not safe for children and young people to remain at home. While children cannot stay at home, Churches of Christ support them to build positive, healthy relationships with their family through the committed support of foster and kinship carers.
It is thanks to these dedicated individuals and families that children and young people are able to grow and find belonging in their community. Our church is going to bless and encourage them by sending a Christmas gift hamper for each foster family!
How do I participate?
- Choose a foster family from the list and collect a hamper from The Lakes Church (or decide to buy a few items or make an optional donation to contribute to the project).
- Use the shopping list we provide to go shopping for items to put in the hamper!
- Return the gifts by Sunday 26th October.
Important information
Read this before you go shopping.
- Only buy what you’re able to. Don’t feel like you have to fill a hamper.
- A lid needs to fit on each hamper, so don’t buy anything too big.
- Some hampers will fly thanks to East Air, so don’t buy aerosols or breakable things.
- Out of respect for each family, don’t buy Bibles or things with scripture on them. Our goal isn’t to evangelise, but to show love and generosity.
- Each hamper will be hand-delivered by a support worker with Churches of Christ. We will add a Christmas card to each hamper with your first name(s) on it, so that the family knows it comes from a church community who cares.
- Each hamper will be checked by support workers before delivery, so don’t wrap anything and don’t include medicine, vitamins, perishable food, second-hand items.

#4 A small gift for each child/teenager
- For children – age appropriate book, toy, sport, hobby item, craft kit, hat, hairbrush/comb/hair ties (gift set), bath or body lotion (gift set).
- For teenagers – headphones, speaker, comic book, jewellery, fishing gear, hairbrush/comb/hair ties (gift set), bath or body lotion (gift set).
