Serving the Community
Here at The Lakes Church we know that God has shaped each of us to serve in certain ways. He causes His church to build, grow and shine as we each play our part.
Your faith will grow and you will come alive as you do the things God has created for you to do. If you would like to serve or would like to know more about areas available please grab a serve booklet from the info desk or contact us.
We believe that prayer is a valuable part of our relationship with God, and a powerful way to impact our world. We regularly share things to focus on in prayer as we seek God together. Please contact us if we can pray for you or if you are here on a Sunday, grab a prayer card and put it into one of the giving boxes and we will pray for you and your need.
Often it can be a busy week for food requests for people in need in our community. People in our church regularly bring non-perishable food items, ready for us to give. If you are able and would like to, pick up some extras during your weekly shop and donate them to the info desk on a Sunday. Alternatively, drop by the church office in Cairns during the week if you need some food for yourself or your family, and we’ll do our best to help you!
We offer professional counselling through trained counsellors in our church. Please contact us to arrange an appointment.
Mission Interest Group (MIG)
MIG are a group of people in our church who have committed to supporting individuals through prayer and care, practical support and helping to discern God’s calling for missions. They are regularly in contact with the individuals we support locally and around the world. In terms of support, the church gives 14% of our income each month to the work of Missions. If you would like to find out more about the organisations and individuals we support please see the info desk and grab a Missions booklet.
We have a strong connection with Compassion Australia, and there are many people in our church who sponsor children through Compassion. As a church we have an official partnership with Compassion in Cebu, Philippines.
On the second Sunday of each month a team of people provide a meal for residents at the low-cost emergency and crisis accommodation centre – Three Sistas. We seek to encourage the community at Three Sistas through food, conversation and music.
On the thirdSaturday of each month a team of people provide a free BBQ and conversation with backpackers and travellers. We find an available BBQ and table around the lagoon on the Cairns Esplanade, and invite the people to join us for a meal. We meet their physical need for hunger, and also offer to speak to them about faith in Jesus. We have a variety of Gospel tracts in many languages if they are interested in exploring faith after the meal is over.
Cairns Street Chaplains
A number of people from The Lakes Church are involved with Cairns Street Chaplains, who provide basic first aid and practical care for alcohol and drug intoxicated and other vulnerable people, working alongside security and emergency service providers on Friday and Saturday nights in the Cairns night club precinct.
